INTERVIEW: Nicholas Andrews, author of Secrets of the Stonechaser.
Nicholas
Andrews grew up in Dayton, Ohio. After graduating from Bellbrook High
School in 2000, he went on to attend
both Ohio University and Wright State University. He worked as a
freelance video editor for various independent pro wrestling companies
for three years, before returning to his first love of writing. Nicholas
has been writing stories since he was ten years
old. He is also the nephew of Ted Andrews (1952-2009), award winning new
age author.
How long have you been writing Fantasy?
I
started when I was ten years old, which was 25 years ago. Mostly wrote
short stories until I had matured enough to tell long form stories. I
finished my first fantasy novel
at age 21, but being a young writer, the quality was too poor to be
published. But you could say the fantasy genre has been a part of my
life for a long time.
Why do you consider your story to be Noblebright?
My
protagonists are generally good people who try to do the right thing.
They may not always succeed, but the intentions are always there. That
seems to be the defining trait
of Noblebright that most would agree on.
Is this book part of a series?
Yes, Secrets of the Stonechaser is the first book in The Law of Eight series,
which will be five books when completed. The subsequent books published so far are Follow the Faery Footpath and A Sense of Sacrifice, and both are available
now at Amazon and other retailers.
Who is your favorite character from this book?
Probably
Lady Qabala. She's almost like an antagonist that should have been a
protagonist but for the circumstances of her life guiding her on a path
toward malice. She's probably
the most complicated character in the book. Going back to the
Noblebright aspect, she's someone whose good intentions have been
manipulated to the point that she is unable to handle the power she's
won, which leads her down a darker road.
Who is the author you identify more with?
David
Eddings was a big one. I became a fan of his work as a teenager, and he
was one of the major influences as far as the types of stories I wanted
to tell. The
Rivan Codex was my first world-building guide.
What is your favorite Fantasy piece?
Even though it's still not finished, A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin is my favorite series. I was a fan long before
the TV show was even an idea, going back to 1999. My favorite standalone novel is Quest for Lost Heroes by David Gemmell. They've also been an influence on me as far as working in grittier and darker elements
into my stories.
The Law of Eight series 1: Secrets
of the Stonechaser

At one time, Nerris
Palada had been part of the Thrillseekers, adventurers legendary in the
continent of Tormalia. After years spent winning the hearts of the
people and being immortalized in song and story,
they went their separate ways. Now a mercenary, Nerris has become
involved in the civil war gripping the country of Yagolhan, and mired in
a dark place within his soul.
When evil forces
emerge, Nerris is driven out of his army and left to fend for himself. A
chance encounter reunites Nerris with his friends in their home
village, and the Thrillseekers embark on one last grand
adventure. Joined by the mysterious, fledgling sorceress Len-Ahl, the
fellowship soon finds itself on a mission much bigger than their own
desires. What they seek could free the world from a dark threat that has
gripped it since antiquity.
When the dust has
settled between gods and godlings, kings and commoners, and magic and
mystery, Nerris may sink back into darkness or rekindle the joy,
happiness and love of life he once knew.
