"Think you know
Rapunzel's story? Think again, because the tower was only the
beginning..." -- Jennifer Nielsen, New York Times bestselling author of
THE FALSE PRINCE
In all of Tyme, from the Redlands to the Grey, no one is as lucky as Rapunzel. She lives in a magic tower that obeys her every wish; she reads wonderful books starring herself as the heroine; her hair is the longest, most glorious thing in the world. And she knows this because Witch tells her so---her beloved Witch, who protects her from evil princes, the dangerous ground under the tower, even unhappy thoughts. Rapunzel can't imagine any other life.
Then a thief named Jack climbs into her room to steal one of her enchanted roses. He's the first person Rapunzel's ever met who isn't completely charmed by her (well, the first person she's met at all, really), and he is infuriating-- especially when he hints that Witch isn't telling her the whole truth. Driven by anger at Jack and her own nameless fears, Rapunzel descends to the ground for the first time, and finds a world filled with more peril than Witch promised ... and more beauty, wonder, and adventure than she could have dreamed.

Everyone is familiar with the story of Rapunzel. Grounded, a retelling of the story by Megan Morrison, is a magical story that 10 to 12 year old reads will love.
I can certainly appreciate the good writing and wonderful storytelling in this novel. It was well written and the story was well developed. I think it was certainly interesting to have Rapunzel view the witch as a sort of mother figure. (Although, Rapunzel doesn't have any idea what a mother is, or even know the word mother. She does call the witch just Witch the way most people would say mother, though.)
The characters were a lot of fun as well. I appreciated that Rapunzel wasn't saved by a prince but rather by a thief named Jack. She didn't realize he was a thief, of course, but when she discovered that he was, it was quite a surprise. I think Rapunzel did the most growing out of all the characters in this story. She started out as this really naive, innocent thing who had never left her tower and had no idea about the world outside. At the end of the novel, she was still somewhat innocent, but she knew stuff about Envearia (Witch) that made it easier for her to let witch go when witch died.
This book has a lot of action, fights between witch and pretty much everyone who comes into Rapunzels tower, a tree sucking Rapunzel inside of itself to show Rapunzel things, and some death and surprises! I won't spoil everything, because I want you to read this book - so go read.
This book will be a hit for kids and their adults as well.
